Put Your Mask On First The Caregiver Guide to SelfCare Dr Gary Bradt Scott Silknitter 9781943285907 Books Reviews
When this book was first recommended to me, my thought was, "I just don't have the time for another book". I was pleasantly surprised to find that the book is an easy read and very useful. It provides practical advice and straight forward direction in areas that can help manage the world of being a caregiver. While its purpose is for the caregiver of a loved one, I found this personally helpful as a professional in the mental health field. I was able to apply many tips personally and even was able to share them with my clients as they work though their personal struggles in self-care. It is well worth the investment.
Dealing with the care of a loved one when they face a serious illness or injury is always a tough one. As the able-bodied caretaker, you feel it's your duty to remain strong. The authors of this book gently remind us that our wellbeing as a person is important, too. Self-care always seems to take a backseat when caring for a close family member. I love that the authors use real situations and a simple format to help care-takers take care of themselves. The places for notes allow you to create your own lists and reminders. The personable writing is conversational and easy to read. This book is a great choice if you're facing the monumental task of caring for someone you love.
Scott and Dr. Gary have a concise, easy-to-read guide that is a must-have for all caregivers. The book has seven chapters, broken down into caregiver tips that help overcome guilt, feelings of anger, stress and many other caregiver ailments. It is a very easy read, with clear, step-by-step tips at the end of each chapter. I recommend this book to anyone who is caring for a loved one at home, or from a distance.
I found this book to be an amazing accumulation of thoughts and insights that are useful for someone finding themselves in a roll that they may not have been expecting to be placed in. The sound advice can be utilized in so many different situations involving the need to take care of oneself in order to be present for those in their lives.
It is written in a concise and precise manner. The bullet points for each section present themselves in a way that are simple, direct, and manageable at a time when life may not seem so. It is written in a user friendly way that empowers someone with information, but doesn't take up too much time to read or to implement the ideas suggested.
As a child life specialist, in an alternative setting, this book will give me the opportunity to encourage the parents that I work with to take care of themselves as their loved one goes through treatment for a serious or life-threatening illness. It has given me information that I can share with these particular parents to then be able to present to support their children at this difficult time too. Taking care of oneself allows for the ability to support and care for others.

I purchased this book for a family member who is a full time caregiver to her husband. I have been searching for tools to help her cope with this very difficult situation. While reading this book, I was amazed with how it clearly describes the feelings, especially of anger and guilt, she has expressed to me and I know she is dealing with daily. The book serves as an outside source of validation that her feelings are normal which is a huge first step. The book follows up with suggested steps one can take to manage those feelings. I particularly like the chapter on dealing with problems vs. dilemmas. This is great information and advice for everyone – not only caregivers! Written in a simple, straightforward manner, it is easy to pick up, read a page or 2 and be reminded to take care of yourself. Thank you for this much needed tool. My family is truly benefiting and I trust many others will benefit as well.
I wish this book had been around when I was caring for my Mom. As my husband and I are entering the caregiver stage again with his parents. I know I will be referring back to this book countless times. Having this book, this time around has helped and will continue to help deal with all the changes, and everything those changes bring with them. The supportive affirmations, down to earth advice and information in this book is invaluable! I found the lay-out of this book to be very helpful, clear, and easy to understand. Which is why I know this book is not a read once and put on the shelf book, but one that I will keep close at hand. Well done! Many thanks to the writers, Dr. Gary Bradt and Scott Silknitter for putting together such a helpful book.
This is the kind of book that can transcend caregiving alone. It has value for everyone. It is a practical guide to taking care of yourself and the critical value of that effort if you are also taking care of someone else. There are many times the book asks you to stop and make a list of how you will survive this part of your life. There are real life scenarios that span many situations, and there is guidance on how to take care of yourself, so you can help your loved one. The task of caring for a loved one in this situation is usually completely unexpected, and the book addresses that. It is written in plain language, that is easy to understand, and can be applied to many kinds of needs. This should be required reading for those in the support and caregiving roles. It was certainly helpful to me.
